🚀 From Leh’s Thin Air to Space: Inside India’s Human Spaceflight Preparations
India’s human spaceflight journey is taking shape far from traditional launchpads—in the high-altitude terrain of Ladakh. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), along with the Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM), recently conducted a high-altitude astronaut behaviour study in Leh under Mission MITRA.
At 3,500 metres, astronaut candidates (Gaganyatris) and ground teams were tested in extreme conditions—low oxygen, freezing temperatures, and isolation—closely simulating the challenges of spaceflight. Bengaluru-based Protoplanet played a crucial role in setting up and operating mission infrastructure, including isolated camps coordinated through a central mission control.
🎙️ I had an exclusive one-on-one with Dr. Siddharth Pandey, Director, Protoplanet, Bengaluru.
