Exclusive: How India Is Building NLOT, Its Largest-Ever Optical Telescope In The High-Altitude Desert Of Ladakh

August 24, 2026

India is preparing to build the 13.7-metre National Large Optical-Infrared Telescope (NLOT) at Hanle, Ladakh — a major step towards strengthening the country’s capabilities in deep-space optical and infrared astronomy.

In my exclusive interview with Prof. Annapurni Subramaniam, Director, Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru, she explained why India needs a powerful telescope of its own, what NLOT could enable for Indian astronomers, and why building such a facility is important for the country’s future in astronomy.

Why does India need its own giant telescope? What could NLOT change?
